Teak is one of the most durable outdoor furniture materials available, but a little care goes a long way. Here's our expert guide to keeping your teak looking its best.

Grade-A teak develops a beautiful silver-grey patina when left untreated

Let It Silver — Or Keep It Golden

Left untreated, teak naturally develops a silver-grey patina. This is purely aesthetic — the wood remains just as strong. If you prefer the original golden-brown colour, apply teak oil every 3–4 months.

Regular Cleaning

Clean your teak furniture every 2–3 months with:

  1. Warm soapy water and a soft bristle brush
  2. Scrub gently along the grain
  3. Rinse thoroughly
  4. Allow to dry completely before applying any treatment

Deep Cleaning

Once a year, use a dedicated teak cleaner to remove any deep-set grime or mildew. Apply, let it sit for 15 minutes, scrub gently, and rinse. This restores the original wood tone before oiling.

⚠ Avoid Pressure Washers: High-pressure water can damage the wood fibres and raise the grain, creating a rougher surface. Always use a standard garden hose or bucket.

Storage Tips

In harsh winter climates, store teak furniture in a dry, ventilated area or use breathable furniture covers. Avoid plastic tarps that trap moisture and promote mildew.

When to Oil

Apply teak oil with a soft cloth in thin, even coats. Wait 15 minutes between coats. Two coats are typically enough.

Always apply in dry, warm conditions for best absorption.
